Defining the Limits of the Second Amendment: Individual Rights vs Public Safety
In 1791, the United States Founding Fathers added the Second Amendment to the “Bill of Rights,” granting the right to individual gun ownership. In recent years, mass shootings have drastically increased from 87 mass shootings in the 1990s to 587 incidents in 2024 alone. United States citizens now stand deeply divided over gun control, as the gun violence rates keep increasing. The two main political parties in the country hold deeply polarized views; this division contributes to the ongoing debate over whether the Second Amendment compromises national security. Consequently, an average of 3.4 fatalities occur every day due to mass shootings in the United States. This committee is looking to address issues such as the scope of “individual rights” under the Second Amendment, firearm licensing systems, mental health considerations, and the interpretation of Supreme Court rulings. As representatives of our people, it is the Senate’s duty to protect them and our Constitution at all costs.
