Historical United Nations Security Council
Evaluating the Consequences of the 9/11 Attacks and War on the Middle East
*IMPORTANT NOTE: This historical committee is set on September 13th, 2001. The USA has already invoked Article 5 in NATO.
With the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the Cold War began to indicate conflict within the Middle East. Eleven years later, Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait and threat to invade Saudi Arabia caused the United States’ reinvolvement. However, amongst the most faithful Muslims of these countries, some felt their sacred land was being invaded by allied foreign troops, and resentment was starting to build up. When Al-Qaeda was formed, deep hatred had already spread within their small group of followers. After several years of planning, their destructive ambitions unfolded in the fateful events of September 11th, 2001. The Historical United Nations Security Council committee will place delegates in the position of world leaders responsible for responding to the global crisis that followed the September 11 attacks. Delegates will evaluate an international response to terrorism, including military intervention in the Middle East, and the long-term political and humanitarian consequences of a War on Terror. The goal of this committee is to determine how the Security Council should balance international security, state sovereignty and global stability moving forward.
